Hazell named head football coach at Kent State

The Darrell Hazell era at Kent State has begun as the current Ohio State University assistant coach was introduced as the 20th head football coach for the Golden Flashes on Monday (12/20) afternoon at a press conference at the M.A.C. Center.
Hazell, a 1986 graduate of Muskingum College, replaces Doug Martin who went 5-7 (4-4 MAC), including a 28-6 win over Ohio University in the season finale, in his final campaign at KSU. Martin was 29-53 overall and 21-35 in the Mid-American Conference in seven seasons at the helm of the Golden Flashes.
Hazell has served as an assistant for the Buckeyes since 2004. Currently an assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at OSU, Hazell has developed seven student-athletes who went onto careers in the National Football League, including Brian Robiskie, who is in his second season with the Cleveland Browns.
Hazell brings 25 seasons of coaching experience to KSU. He began his coaching career at Oberlin College where he served as the running backs coach from 1986 to 1987. He returned to the Yeomen as the offensive coordinator from 1989 to 1991. Hazell spent a season as the running backs and wide receivers coach at Eastern Illinois University (1988). He then served as the running backs coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1992 to 1994. Hazell had a two season stint as the wide receivers coach at Western Michigan University (1995-1996) before coaching receivers and tight ends at the United States Military Academy (Army) from 1997 to 1998. He then moved on to West Virginia University where he was the Mountaineers’ running backs coach from 1999 to 2000. Prior to joining the Buckeyes, Hazell was an assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at Rutgers University from 2001 to 2003.
After a successful career at Cinnaminson High School in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, Hazell was a three-year starter for the Muskingum College Fighting Muskies at wide receiver. He earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore (1983), junior (1984) and senior (1985). Hazell also received Pizza Hut All-American Honorable Mention honors as a senior and was selected as a team captain by his teammates that same season. He was inducted into the Muskingum Hall of Fame in 1993. Hazell is Muskingum’s career leader in receptions (132) and receiving yards (1,966) and holds the Fighting Muskies’ single season records for receiving yards (805-1983) and touchdown receptions (12-1983). He also established Muskingum’s record for touchdown receptions in one game when he snared three in a 38-14 win over John Carroll University in the 1983 season opener. In addition, Hazell led Muskingum in punt return yards (255) as a senior and currently stands seventh on MC’s all-time list with 469 career punt return yards.
Hazell and his wife Annemarie have one son, Kyle.
