Hazel Lavery mounted a big comeback to win the Newsells Park Stud Stakes at Newmarket for Charlie Hills. Racing tipsters gave Hazel Lavery a 5-1 chance in the hands of jockey William Carson after three runners withdrew earlier in the week.
Dorcas Lane and Hazel Lavery came from behind of the pack to begin challenging Bolivia and 11-4 betting odds favourite Ambivalent in the latter half of the horse race. After claiming the lead, Hazel Lavery would build a gap between the other sprinters and cross the finish line by three and three-quarter lengths.
Carson said afterwards: “The plan was to hold on to her as we didn't know if she'd stay, but she stayed the mile and a half well. Mr. Hills' horses are just starting to come to themselves now. This filly proved she's up to this class and the world's her oyster.”
In other news, Local Hero got his first victory of 2012 in the Betfred 'The Bonus King' Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen. Trainer Steve Gollings’ five-year-old last won a Grade 2 at Cheltenham in January 2011 and was mounted by jockey Paul Bohan in the event. Tipsters gave Local Hero a 9-2 chance and he successfully held off Kian’s Delight by a length and a half.
