The Hayti, Mo. Chamber of Commerce is planning a “haunted October” to help raise funds and bring visitors to Hayti. The “Hayti Horror nights” begins Oct. 4, and according to Hayti Mayor Bobby Watkins, the fall events planned in the city have something to offer everyone.
Horror nights is described as a “house of horrors” and Is located in the old Wonder Bread building on highway 84. After its’ grand opening on October 4 and 5, it will be open each Friday and Saturday until Oct. 19 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Starting on Oct. 21, the haunted house will be open nightly from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m., except it will not be open on Sunday Oct. 27.
"This is the first year that Hayti has had a haunted house,” Mayor Watkins said, “A lot of people have worked hard on this and we are happy to kick off the fall season. It is always great when an event can bring people into town.”
If a haunted house is just a little too scary for you, Mayor Watkins says that the annual fall festival on the square has many different events to participate in. “We will have our annual chili cook-off and fall fest during the day on Oct. 26,” he said, “There will be pumpkin decorating contests, great food and crafts, and just a good day of fun.”
Mayor Watkins says this year the Chamber has worked hard to add other events. “The first annual Zombie pageant and costume contest will be on the square at 5:30,” he said, “We urge everyone to dress up and take part in the events as zombies.”
The Zombie costume contest is for ages seven and up with a five dollar entry fee. Children 0-24 months and two years of age to six years of age can enter with any costume and will be judged separately. At 6:30 p.m. the Chamber will be sponsoring a “Haunted Hayride.” The Chamber will also be sponsoring a “creature feature” for families to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to watch some scary films.
“Our Chamber has worked very hard to organize these events and we are looking for a good turnout, and a good time for families,” Mayor Watkins said, “We hope everyone will plan to spend the day with us in Hayti. Anyone who wants information on contest entries, vendor spaces, or any of the events should contact Rhonda Green at 359-7947. It is great to see so many people working so hard for a community event.”
