Hawks trade for Jamison

It was unclear if the Hawks would be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline yesterday, as they were still in the playoff race but sliding badly with a seven-game losing streak.

Right before the deadline, the Hawks made a minor move to pick up PF Antawn Jamison from the Los Angeles Clippers. Jamison had not appeared in 16 of the last 17 games for the Clippers, but would get immediate playing time with the injury-ravaged Hawks.

The Hawks have lost Al Horford, Pero Antic, and Gustavo Ayon to injury at the moment, and are left with a woefully undersized lineup until Ayon and then Antic return from their injuries.

Jamison, 37, has played for 15 seasons in the NBA.

For this season, Jamison is averaging 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. For his career, Jamison is averaging 18.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He was originally drafted in 1998 as the 4th overall pick by Toronto out of North Carolina.

The move cost the Hawks little, as they shipped the rights to 2005 second-round pick Cenk Akyol back to the Clippers. Akyol currently plays in Turkey, but has never appeared in a NBA game.

The Hawks made the move thanks to a salary-cap exception created by Horford's injury, so they are able to absorb all of Jamison's remaining salary of $1.4 million for the 2013-14 season. The hawks may elect to keep Jamison due to their depleted roster, or buy him out. That decision has not yet been made by GM Danny Ferry.
