Miami's bats came to life Saturday afternoon down in Morehead, Kentucky, as the 'Hawks (6-10) drummed Morehead State (2-15) 16-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. Six different Miami batters had multi-hit days at the plate, led by rightfielder Marcus Makuch, who had four. He was one of three 'Hawks to drive in three RBIs, joining thirdbaseman Brad Gschwind and centerfielder Bryce Redeker, who hit his second home run of the year. Mac Thoreson (2-1) made the start for Miami, allowing two unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work.
The Eagles were first to score, nabbing a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning off of Thoreson. The leadoff batter reached on an error and came around to score on a double. The second run came in on a two-out double. But when the 'Hawks came to bat in the top of the third, they responded with all the runs they would need for the day.
After the first two men reached base to start the inning, Redeker doubled in Miami's first run. A fielding error allowed the tying run to score, and then two batters later, catcher Nate Bowles was issued a bases-loaded walk to push in the go-ahead run. Makuch and secondbaseman Jon Edgington each had RBI singles sandwiched around a Gschwind RBI sac fly before shortstop Ryan Kaup doubled in the seventh and eighth runs of the inning.
Miami added four more runs in the top of the fourth. With men on first and second with one out, Bowles singled a run in. Then Makuch drove one in with a double. Gschwind reached on an error by the shortstop, driving in both Makuch and Bowles to give Miami a 12-2 lead.
The 'Hawks added a run in the fifth inning on another RBI double by Redeker and another in the eighth when Makuch drove in his fourth run of the night on yet another double. Miami had six doubles in the game. The cherry on top was added in the ninth inning when Redeker slammed his home run to left field, a two-run shot.
Ryan Meyers and Ryan Campbell combined to pitch 2 1/3 inning in relief, giving up one run in the ninth inning. After three consecutive singles to start the inning, the run came in on a fielder's choice, but the game ended without further damage.
The Eagles and RedHawks took to the field for their second game shortly after. The recap of that game is available here.
