The RedHawks bats were alive and well in Bloomington, Indiana Tuesday afternoon, as Miami (23-18, 10-5 MAC) pounded out 13 hits en route to a 10-3 win. The Hoosiers (25-16) had 11 hits on the day, but the 'Hawks still managed to improve to 2-0 against them this season. Firstbaseman Kyle Weldon had a 4-for-5 day at the plate for Miami, while shortstop Ryan Kaup drove in three RBIs on three hits.
The 'Hawks scored the game's first run in the third inning. Kaup started the action with a leadoff single. After he moved to second base on a sac bunt, he stole third and was able to pick himself up and score when the catcher's throw sailed wide for an error. However, the Hoosiers beat up Miami's starter, Alex Brown, in the bottom half of the inning, sending eight men to the plate and scoring three times to go up 3-1. The runs came on a bases loaded walk, a sac fly and an RBI single. Brown was relieved by Shawn Marquardt after facing six batters in the inning and only registering one out.
From that point on though, it was all Miami, as the RedHawks scored nine unanswered runs. They picked up three right away in the top of the fourth inning. Thirdbaseman Brad Gschwind singled to start the inning, and one out later, Weldon singled as well. Designated hitter Cory Klenke drew a two-out walk to load the bases, and then Kaup smacked a double into left field that unloaded them. With the lead regained at 4-3, the rout was on.
Two more runs came in the fifth inning, when leftfielder Bryce Redeker hit a two-out two-run home run, his fifth of the year. Just one inning later, three more runs came across the plate. Kevin Bower started the sixth with a pinch-hit double, which Kaup followed with a single. Secondbaseman Jon Edgington then scored them both with a single into center field, before he himself came in to score on a triple by centerfielder Ryan Brenner. The cherry on top was a single run scored in the ninth inning. Gschwind was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He moved up on a wild pitch and then scored on Weldon's fourth hit of the day, a single.
Marquardt (3-5) picked up the win by pitching four innings of shutout baseball. The Hoosiers only managed five hits against him, and then only one against Matt Rosinski, who pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.
Miami will return home to Oxford this weekend to host MAC opponent Bowling Green (15-22, 8-7) in a three-game series.
