Hawkeye, loyal companion of slain Navy SEAL, has been adopted

Hawkeye, the brave chocolate lab who melted hearts and prompted a flood of tears, has found a new home. It is hard to know whether a beloved pet ever forgets his master, but Petty Officer Jon Tumilson, who died in Afghanistan, has not forgotten his loyal companion.

In the fallen hero’s will, he specified that if he predeceased Hawkeye, he wanted the dog to live with Scott Nichols, a dear family friend and the man who looked after Hawkeye when his master was on a tour of duty.

Nikki Virgilio, a friend of Tumilson, who was known affectionately as “J.T.,” wrote on her Facebook page:

I can happily report to you that Hawkeye was willed to one of J.T.’s good friends, the same one that took care of him whenever J.T. was deployed overseas.

Let us hope that this ending to one sad story marks the beginning of a new, happy one for Hawkeye and Scott.
