University of La Verne President Devorah Lieberman has announced the appointment of Executive Vice President Philip A. Hawkey as interim dean of the university’s College of Law, effective immediately. Hawkey succeeds Allen K. Easley, who resigned for personal reasons.

“The Board of Trustees and I are confident that Mr. Hawkey will be an effective leader,” said President Lieberman in a written statement.

Hawkey has served as the university’s Chief Administrative Officer since 1998, overseeing what is now a $145 million budget as well as 600 employees. Along with extensive prior public sector management experience, which includes terms as city manager of Pasadena (Calif.) and Toledo (Ohio), he is an attorney and current member of the American Bar Association. During the past three years he has previously served on two ABA site visit teams to other law schools.

Hawkey holds a juris doctorate from Cleveland State University and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1976. He has also earned a master’s degree in Public Administration from Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Baldwin-Wallace College of Berea, Ohio.

The university will conduct a search to select the next dean of La Verne Law at a date still to be determined.
