Mystery writer Mark Troy belongs to the exclusive club of authors who write in the mystery genre of Hawaiian Noir. His latest book, The Splintered Paddle, is written in the style of shadowy hard-boiled detective novels while contradictorily set in the bright, beautiful islands of Hawaii. By guiding readers through a tour of paradise that visitors seldom see, Troy’s latest book truly fits in the category of Hawaiian Noir—an extension of the traditional Fiction Noir category of books featuring hard-boiled detectives that show readers the shady underside of crime. The title comes from the Law of the Splintered Paddle, a traditional Hawaiian mandate to protect the defenseless, and Troy’s Honolulu detective Ava Rome takes the law seriously.

Troy will bring his Hawaiian Noir book tour to Texas on July 12, 2014. At 2:00 p.m., Troy will meet fans and sign copies of his new book at Perrine Winery in College Station, Texas. Also this week, he will appear on Brazos Valley Magazine, aired on KAMU-TV, to discuss The Splintered Paddle and his other books. Brazos Valley Magazine is a weekly community-affairs show that features guest interviews and gives previews of upcoming events. The episode with Troy’s guest appearance airs July 10 at 7:00 p.m., again on July 12 at 6:00 p.m., and for the last airing on July 13 at 5:30 p.m.

One of Troy’s earlier works, Pilikia is My Business, was nominated for a Shamus Award for Best First PI Novel by the Private Eye Writers of America. His latest, The Splintered Paddle, promises to be another award-winner for the author. He attended the University of Hawaii and worked at Kamehameha Schools as a researcher, giving him a love of the islands and insider background for his books’ settings. He now lives in central Texas, where he is active in several writers groups including Brazos Writers.

Five Star Publishing, a division of Gale publishing and part of Cengage Learning, is the publisher of The Splintered Paddle. Brazos Book Events set up the book tour stop at Perrine Winery in College Station.
