Hawaii swell biggest in decade: 50-foot waves expected in Hawaii

The Hawaii swell is the biggest in a decade according to the National Weather Service. On Jan. 22, CNN reported that several of the Hawaiian islands will see waves of 40 to 50-feet this week. These waves are the largest to hit the area since 2004. While you might think that's righteous news for surfers, a high-surf warning will keep them out of the water.

"At first glance, the tall waves would appear to offer a golden opportunity for participants in a big wave surf contest that was scheduled to take place Wednesday on Oahu," CNN reports. The winds accompanying the waves will make the water conditions very dangerous.

This Hawaii swell being the biggest in a decade poses problems for the "Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave invitational" which has been postponed until February. For the time being, surfers and swimmers must wait out the swell before getting back into the water. The reason for the huge waves is something not too uncommon, either.

"A large storm with hurricane-force winds is spinning far north of the islands, but is sending a giant swell toward the warning areas, according to CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller" (CNN). With the high surf, some area homes are in danger of being flooded, and The American Red Cross is on standby in case this happens.

Hawaii might experience another big swell in another decade -- or sooner -- it all depends on the storm patterns.
