Hawaii Rainbow Baseball All-time starting lineup

Now that Kolten Wong is on his way with his professional career, this is the time when I start to think about my All-Time University of Hawaii baseball starting lineup. Here’s the surprise, Wong is not in my lineup. But that is what makes this fun because so many fans can argue as to who would be on the field. The parameters are that the selection had to be based on their performance in a Rainbow uniform, regardless of draft status and performance in professional baseball. Eight positions on the field are used, a designated hitter, and a pitching staff of 6 starters and 2 relief. Let the fun begin!

(Years in ( ) indicate time at UH)

Catcher: Larry Gonzales (’86-’88), drafted 22nd rd, Angels 1988, solid defender with a right handed gun, hit over .300, with power

1st Base: Joey Meyer (’82-’83), drafted 5th rd Brewers ’83, career BA .355, 3rd in career home runs w/ 24, not the best fielder but who cares when you have this bat

2nd Base: Todd Crosby (’84-’86), drafted 5th rd Phillies ’86, 5th all time in runs scored (200), 10th all-time in hits (230), played every game in his 3 yrs

3rd Base: Curt Watanabe (’76-’79), FA Brewers ’79, made US Team in ’79, All West Region Team ’79, 2nd in career RBI’s, 4th in trpls, 7th in career hits, dependable and steady at the hot corner.

Shortstop: Thad Reece (’78-’81), drafted 17th rd Athletics, career leader in assists (725), 2nd w/ dbl plays started (64), All-WAC ‘81

Left Field: Mario Monico (’82-’85), drafted 12th rd Brewers, career leader in BA .367, considered most prolific hitter in UH history, has record for most HR in inning (2), All-WAC ’82, ’85, 3rd Team All-American ’84, ’85,

Center Field: Rick Bass (’77-’80), drafted 17th rd Brewers ’80, arguably the best leadoff hitter in UH history, career leader in hits, runs scored, stolen bases, All-District ’80, NCAA Regional Team ’80, All-WAC ‘80

Right Field: Glenn Braggs (’81-’83), drafted 2nd rd Brewers ’83), part of most powerful UH hitting lineup in ’83 incl. Joey Meyer and Greg Oniate, best UH product with combination of size (6-3, 200), speed, and power (once broke a bat with a check swing)

DH: Greg Oniate (’80-’83), ranked 1st in RBI (237), 4th in slugging (.525), 5th in hits (269), & BA (.353), not drafted or signed because he was 5’ 6” and stocky. But really, with his consistent stick and power……..

Starting Pitchers:

LHP Derek Tatsuno (77-’79), is there anything more to be said, one of only two numbers retired by UH, member of College Baseball Hall of Fame

LHP Scott Karl (’90-’92), drafted 6th rd Brewers ’92, 27 career wins, 5th in complete gms (17), 6th in SO (278), All-American & All WAC, ‘92

LHP Bryan Duquette (’80-’82), drafted 2nd rd Brewers, 31 wins ranks 3rd, 2nd in SO (332), 6thin ERA (2.99)

RHP Gerald Ako (’74-’77), drafted 8th rd Royals ‘77, 27 wins, lowest career ERA (2.00), 5th in innings pitched (337.2)

RHP David Smith (’79-’83), FA Mariners ’83, 3rd in ERA (2.44), 4th in wins (30), .789 winning %, 7th in comp. gms (15), not a ton of accolades, but he got outs and won games.

Relief Pitchers:

RHP Gene Smith (’76-’79), FA Brewers ’79, career leader in saves (28), 3rd in ERA (2.88), winning % of .778

RHP Lenny Linsky (’09-’11), drafted 2nd rd Rays ’11, 1.30 ERA, selecrted 3rd team ABCA All-American, holds sgl season record for saves (14 in ’11), it says something to be a relief pitcher and drafted in the 2nd round.
