Hawaii Humane Society needs temporary foster homes for pets

The Hawaii Human Society needs your help as a volunteer. If you like animals and have thought about having one but not sure about the expenses and everyday issues then this might be a great way to get to know a dog or cat before adopting. It is a good way to see how your family might react to a pet in the home without making a commitment. The following areas are needed by the Hawaii Humane Society.

Fostering animals before adoption is a win-win situation. Furry friend gets to go to a nice home and you have the opportunity to have unconditional love from an animal. Health benefits to having a pet are numerous.

This past year HHS placed more than 2,000 shelter animals in foster homes. You can care for shelter animals who are too young, underweight, ill/injured, or who require more socialization before adoption. All basic supplies and medical care are provided by the Hawaii Humane Society. Help an animal get out of the cage and improve your life by volunteering.

Emergency fostering of people's pets is another great way to help an animal.Temporary, short-term fostering services are offered upon availability of community volunteers to those temporarily hospitalized, the disabled and victims of domestic violence. The emergency foster program is not offered to those needing assistance due to housing issues, travel plans or awaiting pet-friendly housing.

To be considered for assistance, complete the Emergency Foster Care application on their website. Applications are also available for pick up at their Admissions Department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will receive a phone call within 48 hours whether you qualify or not.

Pets of Patriots Fostering is another program that helps pets of deployed military in need. The national non-profit Dogs on Deployment provides a database of volunteers willing to provide foster care for service members. Visit dogsondeployment.org to learn more.

Hawaiian Humane Society's Pets of Patriots program also provides foster care assistance for active duty military personnel deploying to serve our country if community volunteers are available. Six to eight week advance notice for foster care requests are recommended. Fill out their Military Personnel Form to apply for the program.

They are actively recruiting volunteers who can open their homes to an animal for six months up to a year. They encourage military families new to the island to volunteer as foster care providers for Pets of Patriots.
