Hawaii boaters warned of Obama’s visit

Although President Obama’s Christmas vacation visit dates to Oahu’s Kailua Bay have not been made official, Hawaii’s recreational boaters and others have been put on notice by the Coast Guard there will be a security zone in effect from December 20 through January 5, unless canceled earlier.

The security zone will be established from Kapoho Point westward to the shoreline near Kailuana Loop, and will include the adjacent canal running from Kapoho Point inland to about 150 yards south of the North Kalaheo Avenue Bridge, the Coast Guard news release said.

The zone will be physically marked on the beach, plus there will be a yellow buoy in the water and an orange boom in the canal, the Coast Guard noted.

Boaters are advised that any person entering the zone without permission can be fined up to $40,000 for each violation, or prison time not to exceed 10 years, if convicted, the Coast Guard warned.

The Coast Guard will be coordinating with the Honolulu Police Department, Marine Corps Base Hawaii and other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, under the direction of the U.S. Secret Service.
