After trying to install The Witcher 2 retail version, about five times, I kept coming up with a CRC error and immediately became frustrated beyond belief. It kept getting stuck on the file "pack0.dzip". My disc was clean without any scratches or marks, so I promptly looked for solutions. The official support page suggested I do a hard drive install where I copy the contents of disc 1 and disc 2, by placing them in separate folders and running the "setup.exe" file from disc 1. That would have worked, but one file found on disc 1, would not copy over, which was "data2.cab". I was at a loss, but then I found some posts on Gamefaqs stating that it might not be the disc, it could be the disc drive itself that's not reading the disc correctly. Then I stumbled upon a post created by XIncubusX that fixed my problem. So if you're having the same problem that I'm having, fear not, hopefully these next few steps can help alleviate your frustrations.
Here's what you'll need: A storage device that can hold at least 10 GB of data and another computer. This is obviously banking on the fact that you will be able to copy files from disc 1 using the other computer's disc drive.
1. Copy all the contents found in The Witcher 2, disc 1, except "data2.cab", and place it into a folder labeled "Disc 1" or however you want to name it, on the computer you want to install The Witcher 2.
2. Put the Witcher 2, disc 1, into your other computer. Explore the disc and find the "data2.cab" file. Copy that file and paste it into the storage device. If it starts copying, that means your drive should be reading the disc and you're in good shape.
3. Once "data2.cab" is done copying to your storage device, insert the device into the computer you'll be installing The Witcher 2, and place "data2.cab" into the "Disc 1" folder. There should now be a total of 13 files in the folder.
4. We're all done with the other computer, so now, just run "setup.exe" that's also found on the "Disc 1" folder you created, and the installation process should start. The progress bar should finally be moving!
5. When the installer asks you for disc 2, it's okay to place the actual disc in your disc drive, since it shouldn't have any problems reading those files. If it does, you can also copy the files from disc 2 onto the hard drive and run it that way as well. You'll need to create a "Disc 2" folder in this case, with all the contents from the second disc, and select the "Disc 2" folder, when the installer asks.
I hope this helps gamers out there having this particular problem. Alternatively, you could also try to update your disc drive and see if it can read the disc afterward. I have not tried this, so it might or might not work. Good luck with the steps above!
