As Super Bowl Sunday approaches, the delivery market for fast food has become even more crowded. While most of us are thinking pizza or Chinese food, others are craving the WHOPPER® sandwich, AMERICA’S FAVORITE BURGER™.
That’s right – delivery from the number 2 global fast food chain – BURGER KING®.
Burger King announced on Friday a successful start to their BK® Delivers program. Originally launched in November with six restaurants in the Miami area, the BK® Delivers program has now expanded to over 30 locations in the Miami-Dade and Broward county areas.
The program started over a year ago in the Washington, D.C. area, where it grew to over a dozen stores in the capital, Maryland and Virginia. BURGER KING® also offers the service internationally in select countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil and Turkey.
“BK® Delivers has developed its own proprietary thermal packaging design to help ensure that food is fresh and either hot or cold when it arrives,” Kurt Schubert, of S.P. Food, a BURGER KING® franchise owner in Cooper City told Examiner. “Hot and cold items are placed in separate containers to maintain freshness and French fries are made right before they leave the store.”
The goal of the new BK® Delivers program is to offer an alternative to the traditional delivery options. While other fast food chains have experimented with the concept, they have been unable to replicate the so-called 30 minute Domino’s delivery model. While pizza and Chinese may travel well, hamburgers were typically cold and French fries were soggy upon arrival.
“You have to create an experience that customers will embrace and accept,” stated Jamie McDonnell, owner of DelVecchio’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant, with several locations throughout South Florida. “For as long as I can remember, pizza has been delivered to your door. I wish BURGER KING® well with their new concept.”
To be eligible for delivery from BK®, a customer must typically live within 10 minutes of a participating location. Currently stores do not deliver fountain drinks, ICEE beverages, milk shakes, soft-serve desserts, and coffee or breakfast items. BK® Real Fruit Smoothies as well as bottled water and soft drinks are available as beverage alternatives.
BK® Delivers requires a $10 minimum order and a $2 service fee. Gratuity is permissible but not included in the service fee.
Although delivery hours may vary, most participating stores provide the service from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. While traditional coupons are not accepted for delivery, BK® Delivers offers specialized coupons especially branded for the delivery program.
