Having dogs reduces asthma in children

Who ever heard that having a dog can have an effect on your child’s asthma? Many studies have been conducted over the years regarding the pros and cons of families with children and pets. Some of the new studies have shown that homes with kids have lesser asthma problems and concerns. To find out what would be the best pet option for your child with asthma, be sure to contact your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home so you know the best dog for your home and family.

There is a condition known as RSV or Respiratory Syncytial Virus that most commonly affects the premature child. It is believed to be linked to the onset of asthma as the child matures. Symptoms of RSV are similar to the common cold. In more extreme cases, hospitalization may be necessary. Scientists have been trying to prove in recent years that households with pets have not only a psychological but physical effect in such cases. This is because tests prove that dog dander contains a microbe that fights off the RSV virus.

Some studies are still in progress but seem to be signifying the potential of a dog companion helping kids with asthma. Tests have been conducted by collecting dust from homes that have dogs, mixing the dust with water and feeding it to mice. RSV was then introduced to the mice several weeks later to see their reaction of it after the consumption of dust water solution given. Two other groups of mice were in the tests with only one of the three getting the solution. The only group that did not get the RSV virus was the one that had the solution. The results of the tests are that households with dogs have less cases of asthma than those without.

This is not to say that you should not do your research with your vet and personal doctor or pediatrician if your child does suffer with asthma. There are more studies to develop vaccines and medications to treat or cure RSV and asthma but wouldn’t it be a great resolution to add a sweet loving dog to your home to help n the physical, mental and overall well-being of your family. There is such a special connection and bond between children and their pets, especially dogs. Wouldn’t it be even more special to know that your pet is also keeping your child healthy and happy?
