Mark Twain famously said that a Classic was "A book which people praise and don't read".
Unfortunately, this comment can be said of many of Mark Twain's works themselves these days. Many readers only exposure to Mark Twain has been in high-school or college literature classes. What those unfortunate readers do not realize is that Twain's writing gets better as you age!
"Children's" stories such as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn have many layers of meaning which the younger readers glides over while enjoying the tales of pirates and river adventures. Older readers see beyond that layer to the critical look at American society in the pre-Civil War Mississippi River valley.
Twain's travelogues such as the Innocents Abroad are ripe with his opinions on Countries around the globe. Much of what he said would not be "Politically Correct" in the 21st Century, but Twain never worried about being PC.
Take a chance this summer to spend some time with Twain's Classics and see what you have been missing.
