Hidden away in the small town of Campo, CA - just an hour east of downtown San Diego - is a train lovers paradise - the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum.
All aboard!
Climb aboard the Golden State Limited and step back in time as you relax in one of the antique passenger cars during a 60-90 minute ride through San Diego's beautiful backcountry. The 12-mile round trip excursion travels to the Mexican border and enters into International Tunnel #4.
The train then returns to the Campo Depot where you can visit the gift shop and the museum's collection of passenger and freight cars, steam and diesel locomotives, and a variety of other educational displays.
More than 80 major pieces of railroad equipment are on display throughout the museum's rail yard. Many are in various stages of restoration by volunteer train enthusiasts. Plan to spend at least half a day to ride the train and tour dozens of railcars, cabooses, and locomotives, including the last surviving steam locomotive of the SD&A Railway.
The Golden State Limited departs the Campo Depot at 11am and 2:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 seniors, $5 kids 6-12, and under 6 are free. Admission to the museum is free with purchase of excursion ticket.
Be sure to check the museum's website as there are special train excursions throughout the year, such as The Bunny Train, the Pumpkin Express where kids get to tour a Haunted Train and the very popular Santa Train North Pole Limited.
