Today at 1:15 pm. President Barack Obama announced that he would seek Congressional approval before striking Syria. Constitutionally, that is the only way the attack would not amount to an impeachable offence. For Obama to employ the unitary executive claim once more, would precipitate a Constitutional crisis if Congress wanted to push it.
The fact that we are still considering an attack should give any American pause to question how dysfunctional our two political party's have become. Of course the main stream media is part of the dysfunction so they haven't reported on the facts that most of us don't believe we have any business attacking Syria for any reason in the first place.
One reason is almost no one out side the DC Beltway believes the story of the Syrian government using chemical weapons against its own people. Most Americans seem to perceive this is as yet another in the false flag syndrome that began with George Bush and the phony WMD claims that were proven false as the Iraq war drug on and Bush kept changing reasons we were there because the lies were exposed.
Syria is no particular threat to the United States and if the blogs can be seen as expressing the opinions of many Americans no one believes that Obama cares two hoots about Syrian civilian casualties from chemical weapons. Most of the posts believe that this war is for natural resources such as oil and natural gas and human rights is a phony fig leaf for the real motive, profits from resource extraction and denying those we oppose those same resources.
As I noted the other day, Israel has granted drilling rights in the Golan Heights to an American company GNE or Genie Energy, who has Dick Cheney and Ruppert Murdoch among its board of directors. In case anyone is wondering, the Golan Heights belongs to Syria but Israel would like to keep the Golan Heights just like they are annexing all of the Palestinian lands.
All we need is for the Israeli government to take a page from American History and declare it is their manifest destiny sort of like taking Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California from Mexico no matter how much I wish we could give Texas back.
There are also tales about a pipeline across Syria that also involves Iran and Iraq as well as Russia. Putin has gotten a lot more combative since Snowden lighted in Moscow and today demanded that if America has proof of Syria's use of chemical weapons use on its people that Obama produce it for the UN. I don't believe there is any real proof no matter what Joe Bidden says.
One of the biggest stories that will eventually come out of this latest round of endless wars, is that more and more Americans believe we no longer have a functional two party system, and that the only will of the people being done during the Obama administration is the will of Wall Street and the rest of Corporate America, and that nothing the rest of us believes matters to our leaders.
The desire for war with Syria even as our supposed allies drop off because of the level of protest against participation in countries such as Britain, seems to have now convinced most Americans that both Democrats and Republicans are corrupt beyond repair. Many express the feeling that neither party cares what most of us believe or think and all that matters is keeping the Corporate masters satisfied because we the people have no other choice.
In a nation that seems increasingly restive, with teachers refusing to give standardized tests, fast food workers reviving the labor strike as a tactic against work place Banana Republic dictators like Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Burger King, and the seeming rebirth of anti-war protests, is this the beginning of an American Fall to go with the Arab Spring?
What will the impending debt ceiling debacle mean for America politically and economically? Will any of us willingly accept the legitimacy of our corrupt and money driven political process in the next election cycle in 2014 or better yet how about 2016?
