As the New York Giants paraded down the “Canyon of Heroes” social networking sites were flooded with images and messages from fans of Big Blue. Many of the comments were directed at Jets fans, as the Giants were once again the “Kings of New York.” As the day wore on a good friend of mine asked me a very interesting question: “As a diehard fan of the New York Jets, have you reached your breaking point with the team?”
The easy answer to the question would have been to say yes, especially after the recent late season collapse, the locker room turmoil, and the team’s inability to win a Super Bowl for over 40 years. But then I realized that the emotional roller coaster ride that your favorite team puts you through is all part of being a fan. For every low that you experience, like the Jets coming up short in last year’s AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh, there is the high from watching your favorite player Curtis Martin get elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. For every missed field goal by Doug Brien in the playoff game against the Steelers, there is Nick Folk booting the Jets past the Colts. For every mention of the “Fake Spike Game”, there are the memories of the “Monday Night Miracle” and the Curtis Martin halfback pass against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For every Otis Smith, there is Darrelle Revis.
Lets face it as fans we are going to experience it all with our teams: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Right now it is a tough time to be a fan of the New York Jets, but we as a group have been here before. Once free agency begins and the NFL draft approaches we will once again be back rooting for our team as the excitement builds for training camp. With some changes there is a very good chance that Gang Green will be back in contention in 2012. So to answer my friend’s question, no, I am not at my breaking point with the New York Jets. I offer my congratulations to the New York Giants for a tremendous Super Bowl victory and I look forward to the day where the Jets will be enjoying a parade of their own.
