OP-ED piece not a news story
Have Casey Anthony & Drew Peterson developed a certain amount of “Star Power?”
Only in America can you become a celebrity when accused of murdering your innocent child or of killing couple of your wives!
These two cases bring a serious question about what happens in America when someone gets a huge amount of exposure from the media due to their alleged actions. There is some point in this process while they may still be a suspect, where they became a celebrity of sorts.
We are country that loves celebrities, we adore them. We give unto some of them near mystical powers. This is not new to our country. Some very horrible people have become legends, Jessie James robbed banks and killed people but is still today viewed as one of the good guy killers. Billy the Kid was respected a lot more by history than was the sheriff that finally killed him.
More recently John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde were all celebrities of their time.
Modern day examples would be Charles Manson, heis now 75 years old and still getting hundreds of pieces of fan mail per week. He ordered the slaughter of defenseless people and he’s a cult hero.
The Menendez brothers brutally murdered their parents to get control of the family money. One of them met through letters and married a Playboy Bunny.
It’s a strange and very foreign concept of hero worship to me. I’m the last person in the world to try and given anyone the answer as to why people are drawn to the dark side. But that is really it in a nut shell. Why do beautiful women like the bad boys? It’s a form of rebellion, breaking of a taboo, the shock factor that draws people to those people that are way out on the edge.
All of these things and more are likely more bring these unlikely heroes a certain number of fans. I’m sure if I did some national survey each of these people have somewhere around 1 to 2 percent of the population is attracted to these two people.
You can’t get much farther out on the edge than Casey Anthony, or Drew Peterson. Both are accused of murdering someone they were supposed to have loved and protected. But when they come under suspicion they act more like they have just be nominated for some great honor. But hey, why not, there are people around them that treat them that way and feed their over inflated ego.
So with a United States population of 307,964,085 we’ll just call it 308,000,000 if my math is correct that means in the United States Drew and Casey each have between 3,800,000 and 7,600,000 people that would love to shake hands and hang out with these people.
I really don’t understand this whole issue, it totally confuses me and turns my sense of right and wrong upside down and inside out. I guess I’m not an out on the edge person.

This might put into perspective how these cases are a part of the overall decline of our once great nation:
Once Upon A Time in America
by Doyle F. Wheeler
Once upon a time truth and honor did shine!
It was a way of life for many you see,
Honor stood as King,
While truth was the Queen!
It was how a man was measured,
Not by his size,
But rather if he was truthful or lied!
But times have changed I fear,
For no longer is honor or truth revered!
Honor became passé,
While truth just went to its grave!
Heroes became those that shined,
In movies or sports and even in crime!
Ethics and integrity were lost along the way,
Political spin took their place!
Now Lawyers rather than law rules the day,
If you’re rich enough,
Innocence’s is a foregone verdict away!
Life has become a series of lies,
Of our heroes committing more serious crimes!
Until now there is no longer any surprise,
At how low men and women will go,
To enjoy their lives!
Will honor ever return as King?
Will truth come back as our Queen?
Surely not without an innovation from us all,
For they’re both near death,
Where they once stood tall!
For hundreds of years Truth and Honor served us well,
As pillars of strength between Heaven and Hell!
Strengthening those pillars should man’s goal,
If we are ever to get back America’s soul!

Just to let you know
I have recently had a stroke that has resulted in some seizures. At times I make grammar errors as I don't always have someone available to proof read these articles, before I have to submit them.
I try to do my best to keep the information fresh. The old brain doesn't connect the dots as it once might have. The stroke dusted some of the dots of my dice I'm afraid. Thank you for being understanding.
Please feel free to point these errors out to me as I review all comments and try to use the information to give you a better article.

Every year in Northfield Minnesota they have what they call "Jesse James Days" I guess because he was noted for robbing the Northfield bank. I never understood that, even though I wandered the streets of Northfield during the event. not only did the james gang rob banks and trains, they also shot and killed without hesitation and raped women without a guilty second thought. hmmm I wonder what the folks in california would say if they celebrated charles manson days every year in LA?
I guess more writers should have a stroke to write at least as
well as you or is that "as GOOD" as you!
Joe,
thank you that was very kind of you to say.
Kim,
you nailed it again! The sick part is Manson is now 75 years old, he still receives somewhere around 1,000 letters a month as fan mail. There are some sick puppies out there. Or should I say groupies?
Got something to say?
