Have a Wisconsin River outing with Wisconsin River Outings

For a Wisconsin River outing try Wisconsin River Outings. Readers that have followed this column or randomly found articles regarding the Wisconsin River and have been salivating like Pavlov’s dogs at the beautiful scenery replete with sandbars, bluffs, lush forests, and bald eagles should take note of this outfitter.

Scott Teuber, originally from the Chicago suburb Wauconda, owns and operates the Wisconsin River Outings. They have a fleet of 200 canoes that service trips on the Wisconsin River from two locations located at Sauk City and Boscobel.

Wisconsin River Outings is a full service enterprise.  They rent canoes, provide transportation to and from the river, and will even guide some trips.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Chicago residents that do not have camping equipment to find an adventure. One trip they suggest is called the Big-Ka-Hoon-A trip, which costs $290.00 for canoe and transport for a 5-7 day canoe trip covering the whole 92 miles of the Lower Wisconsin River Valley from Sauk City to the Mississippi.

If this is too long they can set the canoeist up with a day trip, a one night trip, or anything in between. They also have a Lil-Ka-Hoon-A trip, which is 60 miles.

Many livery services provide guests with the cheapest equipment available in order to cut costs. This is not the case with Wisconsin River Outings.  Scott told me they really focus on high end equipment in order to provide a quality canoe experience for their guests.

They use Wenonah royalex canoes, which are quiet and the seats are comfortable, so this canoe really enhances the experience. Many new paddlers might not return to the sport if their first day on the river results in a sore derriere.

We are in the middle of a recession and many have had to curtail travel.  What is great about the Wisconsin River from an economic aspect is it is a frugal adventure travel experience.  There is no fee for camping on the sandbars.

The sandbars are open and available for no cost on a first come first serve basis with little regulation. If already in possession of canoe and camping equipment it is even less expensive, but if not the trip costs only a canoe rental and transportation. This is a considerable savings when one considers that many parks charge not only an entrance fee, but also a daily camping fee per person.

Scott sees the river as a valuable resource to the community and is committed to try and lure adventure sport enthusiasts to this semi-remote corner of the state. A balance is needed to keep the area pristine and he preaches conservation, leave no trace ethics, sharing the river, and keeping quiet on the river to preserve the solitude for others.

This summer take an alternative adventure travel vacation in the Midwest. Instead of Door County, the Dells, or staying at home, take a trip to the Lower Wisconsin River Valley and let Wisconsin River Outings show you the way.
