The temperature here in SLC has certainly plummeted and there's still plenty of snow on the ground and in the skies to keep us fully entrenched in the winter season. If your finances aren't looking too flush after all that holiday shopping but you're still freezing worry ye not - vintage finds are hotter than ever and one of the best ways to go green with your wardrobe!
My favorite shop for both budget friendly and eco-friendly items is Uptown Cheapskate in the Gateway shopping district. Salt Lake is the birthplace of this amazing franchise and eco-fashion resource - founded in part by UofU student Chelsea Sloan just a few years ago. While it houses mainly consignment finds there's plenty of on-trend items to score and allows those who want to update their wardrobe in greenie style and also be easy on their budget.
Since Salt Lake's winters can be so unpredictable with snow for days and then clear skies and freezing temps the following week and on into March a smart wardrobe that functions well and looks good is a challenge. You're looking for both thick knits and layers this time but trying to avoid a heavy price or perhaps the unethical human cost in fast fashion outlets. Also having a closet of eco-fashion sweaters can be a bit of a stretch to start since you may not be sure what exactly is an eco-fashion garment? First and easiest thing to think of it is "reuse" and "recycle" your fashion...or in this case someone else's donated fashion finds. That way they stay out of the landfills and get a lot of greenie style mileage out of them.
Uptown Cheapskate has always had a fresh approach to vintage I've found. It's not your grandmothers consignment shop! The racks are color coordinated and sized and there's quite a few designer labels to spot. If you look a little harder by reading labels you can even pick out some items made with organic fabrics. But the real greenie style key here is being able to easily find looks that are perfectly stylish in the mainstream fashion realm while also being eco-fashionable by way of reusing and remixing.
So next time you're shivering and contemplating a shopping trip for a cable-knit sweater or two make your first stop downtown for some stylish, seasonally appropriate, earth-friendly finds at Uptown Cheapskate. You can find them at: 353 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101.
