What started out as a family fundraiser to raise money for prostate/testicular cancer last year has developed in a full-face beard-a-thon for Seaford, NY resident Anthony DiBono.
Dubbed “Beard Fest,” the four hour event was inspired by the “Movember Foundation’s annual “No Shave November” campaign, which encourages men to grow their facial hair in support of men’s health issues.
“Last year we raised $650,” stated DiBono, 23, who decided it was now time to “take things to the next level.”
Beard Fest will take place this Wednesday (Dec. 19) at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall, and will not only raise money for charity, but celebrate facial fuzz in all its incarnations with friendly contests for “Best Mustache,” Best Goatee,” and “Best Partial,” as well as more unusual prizes given for “Best Santa Beard,” and “Best Fake Beard.” The latter, says DiBono “gives the ladies a chance to compete as well.”
Judging will be held though crowd participation, with “head-to-head elimination rounds.” Champions in each category will be presented with a medal, certificate and “beard-endorsing wristband.” There will also be a special auction for DiBono’s beard.
Anyone interested in attending can come to Mulcahy’ 3232 Railroad Ave., Wantagh, NY between 6:30 pm-10:30 pm. Admission is $30, with proceeds going to the Movember Foundation. For more info. and directions call 516 783-7500.
