Organ meats are an important part of your dogs balanced diet. Beef heart is loaded with nutrition and enzymes that your dog needs and it is very tender and easy to chew. Heart is not always easy to find at regular supermarkets, but you can find it easily at Mexican markets where it is called corazon de rez.
Ingredients:
1 lb beef heart
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp dried rosemary
2 cloves chopped garlic
2 Tbsp goat yogurt
1 cup chopped organic parsley
1 hard boiled egg
small pinch the shell of one egg (ground into a powder with mortar and pestle)
You will also need a silicone heart shaped mold tray
Chop the beef heart into 1" pieces. Heat the olive oil. Add garlic to pan and saute. Add the chopped beef heart and rosemary. Saute until all sides are browned. Allow to cool and then add to food processor. Blend a few minutes on high speed. Add the goat yogurt and blend until smooth. Next add the parsley and then the egg and egg shell, blend until smooth and creamy. Prepare heart shaped mold tray with olive oil. Add mixture to the mold tray. Cover with foil and freeze.
Organ meats are very rich, so you never want you dog to have a whole meal of it unless it might cause a digestive upset. Think of the proportion of heart to the animal it is from. For a 10 -15 lb dog, one or two heart treats a week is about right.
