Black Friday is known for getting up early, lines, packed parking lots, and mega sales. For some, the crowds are not an issue, but if you would prefer to skip the shopping maul, a great alternative is to do some creative holiday shopping at The Albany Art Room on Madison Avenue.

The Albany Art Room has brought the excitement of artistic expression to the Capital Region since January of 2008. Artists of all levels, whether dabbling or accomplished, can use the studio’s materials, space, and even smocks, to explore and discover. Owner, Karen Schupack, and her staff, support you in your creative process, offering ideas, suggestions, and insights.

As for holiday shopping ideas, The Albany Art Room has a new show opening Black Friday, featuring small works by local artists and craftspeople. They also have a new line of Albany Art Room Take Out Kits, a wide-selection of art supplies, including Melissa and Doug Art Kits, and gift certificates.

In addition to enjoying the open studio space and materials, there are a variety of classes for adults and children. Parents especially appreciate the kiddie classes, camps, and home-school groups, since they provide quality programming and excellent opportunities for learning. Kids enjoy the fun. Private lessons and memberships are also available.  All make great gifts.

As a special treat, you and your kids can make your own distinctive gifts in the open studio. The newest project available is the glazing of ready-made pottery, such as bowls, plates and mugs. For the regular $7 per hour studio fee, plus the cost of the piece ($6.75-$10), you and your children can create a lasting, functional, and lovely gift. You can do this project any time in the regular open studio, Tuesday - Friday, 11 am – 6 pm, Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm, and Sunday, 10 am – 1 pm. After you paint your piece, staff dips it in a clear glaze and fires it in their new kiln. You can pick up your one-of-a-kind gift item about one week later.

So, avoid the typical Black Friday chaos and head to the colorful Albany Art Room instead. This special, mom-owned business has off-street parking and is a great place to have fun for an hour or two while the kids are out of school. Make some holiday gifts while you are there and do some additional holiday shopping in the gallery and store. You (and your kids) will be happy you did.
