A Hauppauge woman was arrested Saturday in connection with the theft of a puppy from a Dix Hills pet store last month, Suffolk County police said in a Monday news release.
Krista Kazan, 43, of 1 Rollingwood Ct., was released without bail after her arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip. She was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny in connection with the theft of a Pug puppy from a Dix Hills pet store in February.
Police said Kazan went to the Yipity Yap pet store at 1802 East Jericho Turnpike on Feb. 17 and “removed a black purebred Pug from the store.” Detectives said she hid the dog as she left the store and possibly stuffed the pooch into her oversized handbag.
On Feb. 22, officers with the Suffolk County Crime Stoppers Bureau turned to the media and released surveillance images of the woman. The following day, a family member returned the $1,800 puppy to the store.
When the dog was returned, the store’s manager told reporters that he believed the relative was the father of the alleged sticky fingered woman. He said the store had never had a theft prior to this incident.
Kazan was arrested Saturday afternoon at her Hauppauge home, police said. She was held overnight in police custody and brought for arraignment on Sunday, where she released on her own recognizance. Kazan is due back in court on May 9.
