Even those who claim not to believe in ghosts passed up the Wymering Manor in Portsmouth, England due to its claims of paranormal activity.
The house is the oldest in Portsmouth, reports UPI on February 8, which is one of the reasons the town decided to donate the home to the Wymering Manor Trust along with a nearly $50,000 grant for its repairs, after it failed to sell at an auction last year.
The reserve price for the home was nearly $600,000, but it appears its reputation as a haunted house scared potential buyers away.
The Wymering Manor is reportedly haunted by more than 30 ghosts who include a choir of nuns, several children and Sir Roderick of Porchester who was killed on the grounds during the Middle Ages.
Apparitions of Nuns
According to Haunted Happenings the choir of nuns has been seen chanting to music as they cross the hall at midnight. Another nun has reportedly been seen peering down the attic staircase with blood dripping from her hands.
An Embalmed Girl
The ghostly apparition of an embalmed girl also walks the halls of Wymering Manor, or so they say. It seems a young girl died during the beginning of the social season. Because the owners did not want to interrupt the festivities, the young girl was embalmed and hidden away until the social season ended. To keep her face from showing signs of decay, it was painted. At the end of the social season her death was announced. Her spirit is thought to wander the halls of Wymering Manor to this day.
Reckless Roddy
And then, of course, there are the tales of Reckless Roddy. As the story goes, sometime in the Middle Ages a newly-married couple came to Wymering Manor, but the groom was soon called away. While he was gone, Sir Roderick of Portchester visited the home in the hopes of seducing the lonely bride. But, her husband returned unexpectedly and chased Reckless Roddy away on horseback and killed him. As the story goes, the sound of horses is heard in the courtyard whenever newlyweds visit the manor.
Whether the tales of ghostly apparitions and eerie sounds in the night are true, no one knows for sure, but many paranormal investigators think they are. The Wymering Manor is known as one of the most haunted locations in the UK.
The Wymering Manor Trust intends to repair the home and open it as a tourist attraction. How the spirits that live there feel about this is yet to be seen.
