Haskell Indian Nations University had its start in 1884 as an elementary school in Lawrence, Kansas, when 22 Native American children entered its doors. By 1927, it had become an accredited high school, and by 1970, a college.
Currently, Haskell has an average enrollment of over 1000 students. Programs include elementary teacher education, American Indian studies, business administration and environmental science. Native culture is integrated into all curricula.
The college's mission statement states "Haskell embraces the principles of sovereignty and self-determination through a culturally based holistic lifelong learning environment that promotes and upholds respect, rights and responsibility."
