A hot start to the second round propelled Jason Hase, director of golf at the San Angelo Country Club, to a closing seven-under-par 65 at the Midland Country Club and victory in the Callaway Golf Western Championship.
In winning his first Northern Texas PGA major title, Hase birdied the first two holes and eagled the fourth and finished off the bogey-free round with additional birdies on Nos. 9, 12 and 16 to finish with a 36-hole total of 135. Hase picked up a check for $2,600 from the 22,200 purse.
The victory earned Hase an exemption for the Nationwide Tour's WNB Golf Classic, scheduled Sept. 23-26 at the Midland C.C. He had already assured himself of a spot with a birdie in a playoff after tying at 70 with three others in the first round qualifier. By winning it allowed alternate Bruce Smith of the Brookhaven Country Club to get into the event along with Brian McKinley of the Green Tree Country Club in Midland, who opened with a 69.
Local knowledge paid off for Lee Rhind, an assistant pro at the Midland C.C. Rhind, the first-round leader at 68, rebounded after a quadruple bogey on the first hole to make seven birdies for a 69 to finish second at 137, winning $1,800.
Stuart Deane of the Sinclair Golf Training Center claimed third place with 70-68—138 and won $1,400 while McKinley shared fourth with Cameron Doan of the Preston Trail Golf Club in Dallas at 141. Each collected $1,100.
