Has Olivia Pope gone soft with the tears?

See also

When Quinn was introduced to Olivia Pope's team, Huck told her immediately that there is no crying in the office. Olivia Pope simply doesn't cry, and people have to play it cool around her. So why is Olivia Pope turning into a crier more this season than the other two?

We saw a semblance of the old Olivia Pope when she told Ethan that if he didn't stop crying in front of Cyrus she'd have to fire him. When Cyrus howled at the podium after it hit him that James was really dead, Olivia stepped up to finish the approved lie about a carjacking.

But then she was near tears a few scenes before then with her father and almost begging him to act like he's paternal.

"Can you just be, I don't know, nice for a minute to me?" Olivia asked Rowan Pope. "Can you be a dad -- normal, kind, regular dad for just a few seconds for me?"

But is it not odd to ask a man who is responsible for killing 183 people to suddenly turn into Mata Amritanandamayi?

This is the same woman who has looked stone-cold terrorists, rapists, murderers and politicians in the eye and negotiated terms. This is the same woman that Abby slowly walked up to and almost had to sell her on the idea of a hug because she doesn't seem to have any girlfriends. This is the same woman who stared straight at her fiance without flinching and told him she wasn't cheating with President Fitz.

In the first episode of season 1 called "Sweet Baby," Huck found a crying Quinn in a bathroom. He told her, "Well, don't let Olivia see you doing that. She doesn't believe in crying."

This is the same woman who Abby was genuinely surprised to see turn her back to the door and cry in season one's "Enemy of the State." Huck even stood lookout by the door so no one could see her while she needed "just one minute."

But Olivia Pope is turning into a marshmallow these days. Her poker face needs to be on a milk carton somewhere because it ran off and left her. Are gladiators enjoying the more vulnerable Olivia Pope or not so much?
