Has Joan Rivers gone too far?

Is there no one safe from being the butt of one of Joan Rivers’ jokes? The answer to that question is probably a resounding no at least according to her. Lately, actress Lindsay Lohan, 27, and the three Cleveland women who were held captive by Ariel Castro for more than ten years, found themselves on the receiving end of Rivers’ quips.

When asked if she thought Lohan, who recently claimed to have suffered a miscarriage, would make a good mother, the 80-year-old TV host and comedienne laughed and said, “She would have been diapering the wrong end.” While there is no word on Lohan’s reaction to River’s comments (and there were others), two of the three Cleveland women are making it clear that they are not taking the jokes in stride.

Appearing on the ‘Today Show’ on Tuesday, Rivers talked about her daughter’s guest room, saying, “Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space.” Noticing The ‘Today’ show anchors did not know how to respond, Rivers asked, “Too soon?”

Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus said they were shocked and disappointed at the hurtful comment. But to her defense, Rivers pointed out plenty of comedians have done schtick about tragic events adding, “The TV the guy gave them must not have had SNL.”

Attorneys for Berry and DeJesus released the following statement on Wednesday:

“Our clients have become aware of Joan Rivers’ unfortunate comparison of living in her daughter’s guest room to their captivity. We understand that Ms. Rivers is a comedienne; however, the idea that a celebrity would say something this hurtful, on national television no less, is beyond shocking and disappointing. Our clients are strong, private women who have endured unwanted and often painful media attention for quite some time. They now have to endure this, which is a new low and we believe a sincere apology is warranted.”

Rivers, who so far refuses to apologize, said the girls shouldn’t complain. “They got to live rent free for more than a decade. One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They’re ok. I bet you within three years one of them will be on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’
