With the recent passage of gay marriage in New Jersey, many ultra right wing Christians feel America has lost its values. However, were the natural disasters of this millennium actually brought on by the legalization of same-sex marriage? That all depends on how much you trust the teachings of certain public figures.
There is no doubt of the sheer damage that past hurricanes have inflicted upon the country. Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy resulted in numerous deaths, injuries and property damage. According to various ministers and public officials, these storms were actually brought on by the acceptance of same-sex marriage from God.
Right wing conservative minister and talk show host Pastor John Hagee was one of many who believed that God would punish America for its acceptance of gay marriage. Hagee is quoted as saying,
First of all, let me say this; Sodom and Gomorrah was God’s pilot study for his response to the homosexual society...here's the measuring rod, it's not if the government approves it, it's if the people accept it; and if the righteous accept it, judgment will come.”
John Hagee's words were loud, clear and in parallel with the words of another conservative minister and religious talk show host's words. Pat Robertson is no stranger to controversy. The 700 Club host made similar statements about Disney World's Gay Days according to CNN saying,
I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you ... It'll bring about terrorist bombs; it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor."
'God's destruction' doesn't end with those words either. According to right wing Christian author and self proclaimed 'prophet' John McTernan, homosexuality itself was the reason for God's wrath. In a blog before Hurricane Sandy touched down, McTernan said the following,
The President is promoting sodomite marriage and is the church repenting of this? Romney is also pro-homosexual, except for now he stops at sodomite marriage...Both of these candidates offend the Holy God of Israel by promoting the homosexual agenda...One of the states promoting homosexual “marriage” is Maryland, and the storm is heading directly toward this state."
Religious figures are not the only ones comparing the doomed Sodom and Gomorrah cities to modern day gay marriage. According to the Russian online publication, the Moscow Times, the United Russian Deputy Dmitry Sablin said, "We live in Russia, not Sodom and Gomorrah...[Russia] was founded on its own traditional values, the protection of which is dearer to me than even oil and gas."
The sentiments expressed above are clearly of a group which believes God is still exacting vengeance the way the ancient Dead Sea cities were obliterated. Are these notions applicable from a biblical standard in modern times? Or, have biblical misconceptions pulled the wool over the faces of these anti-gay marriage proponents?
According to scripture, the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah were great. Just prior to its divine destruction, Abraham pleaded on behalf of those who may be righteous in those cities for it to be spared. However, other than Abraham's nephew Lot and his wife and daughters, God found not one righteous person.
The ignition of God's wrath came when His two angels staying in the towns were almost attacked by men of the cities that wanted to know them, sexually. The dilemma however that anti-gay proponents, who believe hurricanes are God's wrath on gay marriage face is obvious. God did not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah with a storm, but with divine sulfur and fire from the heavens.
Also, the fact that God found no one righteous in an extremely small populated territory can not compare to the 300 million population of America. Surely, there are plenty of people in America that oppose homosexuality. Therefore, for John Hagee to say,"If the righteous accept it, judgment will come" is a paradox that undermines the fact that the 'righteous' will never accept it. Isn't that why they are called righteous?
A more rational reason for the types of hurricanes that have struck with awe, my not be God created, but human created. Global warming is a phenomenon that scientists have been closely monitoring. It is theorized that the rapid increase of human population, coupled with massive amounts of carbon being emitted is the cause of the Earth warming, and hazardous weather patterns.
According to a Green Huff Post article, it was stated,
Global warming heated the water of the Gulf and Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in greatly increased energy and water vapor in the air above the water. When that happens, extremely energetic and wet storms occur more frequently and ferociously. These systemic effects of global warming came together to produce the ferocity and magnitude of Hurricane Sandy."
In regards to Hurricane Katrina, a US News article that looked at a study on the affects of global warming on weather conditions had similar findings. The article said,
Catastrophic hurricanes, such as 2005's Katrina, are twice as likely to occur during warm years than they are in cold years...You can't say [global warming] caused any single event, but when we start to see a trend like this, I think it shows that there's a good chance these hurricanes wouldn't be happening without warming..."
The matter is still ultimately up for the people to decide. Either weather patterns are changing due to the exceeding human population and carbon emissions, or God has traded in sulfur and fire for heavy winds and rain, attacking gay married couples and their neighbors for living next door to them. I guess one never really knows.
