According to the International Ski Federation website, Alex Harvey of Saint-Ferreol, Quebec has won a gold medal in the men's 1.5 km cross country skiing freestyle sprint World Cup competition in Szklarska Poreba, Poland on Saturday.

On Saturday, Harvey beat silver medalist Josef Wenzel of Germany and bronze medallist Baptiste Gros to capture gold.

The win for Harvey was significant because it comes with less than three weeks from the start of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Harvey had previously won three stage World Cups this year in the 2013 Tour de Ski competition, but this Harvey's first actual gold medal in a World Cup competition.

The timing for Harvey could not be better. Harvey, who is also the world champion in the sprint classical race from the 2011 World Cross Country Skiing Championships in Oslo, is trying to be the first Canadian man to medal in cross country skiing at the Olympic Winter Games.
