According to CBC Sports, Alex Harvey of Quebec City, Quebec recorded a fifth place finish at a 10km classical cross-country skiing race in Val di Femme, Italy on Saturday.

In a press conference on Saturday, Harvey has elected not to compete in Sunday's 9km freestyle cross country skiing pursuit race to rest for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

It has been a very productive winter for Harvey, who is trying to become the very first Canadian male to earn a medal in cross-country skiing at the Olympic Winter Games. He placed among the leaders in a stage World Cup in Oberhof, Germany on December 28 and in Lenzerheide, Switzerland on December 31.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Harvey placed in fourth place in the men's team sprint competition with Devon Kershaw of Sudbury, Ontario. Harvey, Kershaw and Ivan Babikov of Canmore, Alberta will lead the Canadian men's cross country ski team a month from now. The men's cross country skiing competition begins on February 9 with the men's 30km skiathlon at 3:00 a.m. MT.
