Do your small pets enjoy playing with and eating hay cubes? While hay cubes are generally made from alfalfa, alfalfa hay is high in natural sugars and calcium and therefore not appropriate for most small pets in significant quantities. Oxbow Animal Health has introduced a new option for feeding hay: Harvest Stacks. Harvest Stacks are compressed discs of long-strand Timothy hay; no fillers or binding agents (such as molasses) are used. The Harvest Stacks are created by compressing the hay into compact discs which Oxbow claims produce 80% less airborne dust and take up 75% less space than loose hay. Harvest Stacks can be fed as a primary hay source or they can be supplemented with loose hay and used as an enrichment item for your small pets. Harvest Stacks come in three varieties: Western Timothy, Western Timothy with Carrots, and Western Timothy with Chamomile. As with all Oxbow hay products, the hay is 100% hand selected and sorted.
The discs definitely take up less space than a box or bale of hay and would be a great help for individuals traveling with their pets. Placing a disc on the floor is easier and creates less dust than rooting around and separating a bale of hay for the herbivores (discs can be broken into pieces for smaller pets such as rats, hamsters, etc). Pet owners with sensitivities to hay and hay dust will likely find Harvest Stacks a helpful alternative to loose hay, as will pets who suffer from sensitivity to hay dust (the author has just such a rabbit).
The author also has a rabbit who is not the greatest hay-eater, and Lord Grantham was thrilled with Harvest Stacks with chamomile purchased from PetCare Solutions. Lord Grantham played with the hay disc, ran and jumped over the hay disc repeatedly, and finally settled down to eat some of the hay. Since then, his preference for Harvest Stacks hay has become obvious, even though the loose hay he is given is also Oxbow timothy hay. I believe he enjoys pulling apart the hay discs, and eats more of the disc hay because he so often plays with it.
