Harvard, Yale greets class of 2013 by email; Stanford, Columbia and others announce acceptance rates

Some very excited seniors will be walking the halls of their high schools today.  The acceptance rates at many Ivy League colleges adhered to the trend established by previous decades, while a few colleges announced admission rates similar to last year's.

Throughout the afternoon and evening yesterday, March 31, high school seniors received acceptance emails.  Harvard sent the coveted email to 7% of the school's applicants, about the same percentage as last year. Yale announced a record acceptance rate 7.5%  - a 1.1% decrease from last year.

Brown University accepted 11% of applicants this year compared to 13.4% last year. Dartmouth received the highest number of applications in the school's history and accepted 12% of applicants, a 1% drop.  Cornell announced a 1% decrease of acceptances from 20% to 19%.

With a 20% increase in applications this year, Stanford announced that the school experienced the most competition for spots in the university's history; 7.8% of applicants earned a coveted acceptance letter. Duke ranks among the record breakers; the school reported a 17% acceptance rate of applicants versus 20% last year. Columbia increased the number of accepted students by 200, but the admit rate stayed about the same.

Some schools - for the first time in recent memory - increased the percentage of accepted applicants over the prior year's rate.  Princeton increased acceptances by .5% and the class or 2013 will be the largest in Princeton's history: 1300 students.  The University of Pennsylvania accepted the same percentage of students as last year - 17% and had only 4 more applicants this year than last year.
