There have been plenty of stories in the media about One Direction's Harry Styles, 18, being a playboy who breaks hearts, but now comes a report that Styles was the one who got dumped by one of the women he used to date. According to an article published by the Mirror's Sunday People on January 6, 2013, model Cara Delevingne, 20, broke up with Styles over concerns that dating him would hinder her career.
Delevingne and Styles never publicly confirmed or denied that they were dating, even when they were asked about their relationship in interviews, but they were seen on many dates together from July to September 2012. In one high-profile date during London Fashion Week in September 2012, Styles was in the front row of the Burberry fashion show that featured Delevingne on the runway. She and Styles were seen acting cozy backstage at the show. Delevingne and Styles were so close that he reportedly gave a her a spare key to his condo apartment in east London.
Styles has not publicly named any women he's been dating since he broke up with "The Xtra Factor" co-host Caroline Flack in January 2012 after they had a four-month fling. Styles said on Twitter shortly after the breakup made news that he and Flack split up by a "mutual decision." Styles and Flack's relationship was controversial because she is 15 years older than he is, and Styles was 17 at the time they dated. In the United Kingdom, the minimum legal age of consent to have sex is 16.
Styles is now dating Grammy winner Taylor Swift, 23. The couple went public with their romance in November 2012 but have not made an official comments about their relationship.
The Mirror's Sunday People confirmed this report. A source told the tabloid: “Storm just thought Harry was too down market, they didn’t think Cara should be dating a member of a boyband – it was all too low rent. They hung out for a while but as far as they were concerned it was never going to go anywhere.”
One of Delevingne's female friends told the Sunday People: "Cara did like Harry but in all honesty she knew her career was more important and she wasn’t willing to let anything risk it. Harry really wanted to be with her but she finished it just before he got with Taylor Swift.”
But apparently, Delevingne doesn't think that party girls Rita Ora, Rihanna, Paris Hilton and Alexa Chung are too "low-rent" for her, since they are among Delevingne's closest friends. Delevingne isn't exactly squeaky-clean either, since she has a reputation for being a hard partier and has been seen intoxicated in public. In the United Kingdom and in most of the other countries in Europe, the minimum legal age to drink alcohol is 18.
Delevingne, who has been described by some media outlets as the "next Kate Moss," is also an aspiring actress and singer. She made her film debut with a small role in 2012's "Anna Karenina." And she reportedly came close to landing the role of Éponine in the 2012 movie musical "Les Misérables." Samantha Barks got the role instead.
According to the Sunday People, "Pop Idol"/"American Idol" creator Simon Fuller has his sights on making Delevingne a pop star. Fuller has been a longtime rival of "The X Factor" creator Simon Cowell, who helped form One Direction in 2010, by putting five solo singers who auditioned for "The X Factor" U.K. into the group. (One Direction ultimately came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010.)
Cowell was One Direction's mentor when he was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K., and he signed the group to Syco Music, the record company that he co-owns with Sony Music. One Direction has become the biggest act to emerge from "The X Factor," by having No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries.
