Whether or not Harry Styles and Taylor Swift's romance was real or fake, numerous One Direction fans all over the Internet are rejoicing over reports from January 7, 2013, that Styles and Swift (who were nicknamed "Haylor" as a couple) have broken up. And people have been predicting the names of song titles that Swift might have when she inevitably writes a breakup song about Styles. The hashtag #HaylorBreakupSongTitles became a No. 1 trending topic worldwide on Twitter within a few hours after the news broke of the Haylor split.
Styles, 18, is a member of "The X Factor" U.K. boy band One Direction. Grammy winner Swift, 23, is a country/pop singer who famously writes about her ex-boyfriends in her songs. She has given numerous interviews saying that she falls in love quickly and she's never been in a long-term relationship.
Styles, Swift and their representatives have not publicly commented on the status of the Haylor relationship, even when Swift and Styles were seen on high-profile dates and showing public displays of affection with each other.
Styles and Swift reportedly had a brief fling shortly after they met in March 2012, but she allegedly ended it when she found out that he didn't want to be in an exclusive relationship with her. (She saw photos of him kissing model Emma Ostilly on a date in New Zealand when One Direction was on tour in New Zealand in April 2012.)
Swift moved on to dating 18-year-old Conor Kennedy (the eldest son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.) from June to October 2012. Things got serious between Swift and Kennedy so quickly that she even bought a home worth millions next to the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. She and Kennedy have not publicly commented on why they broke up, but sources told the media that Kennedy got scared off by how intense things had gotten with Swift in a short period of time.
Conor Kennedy also had begun attending university, and his student lifestyle wasn't compatible with Swift's lifestyle of being a world-famous pop star. And shortly before Swift and Conor Kennedy broke up, American tabloid Star magazine published a report that Swift had cheated on him with his 19-year-old second cousin Patrick Schwarzenegger. (None of the parties involved in this alleged love triangle have commented on that report.)
Styles and Swift were first seen publicly acting like a couple when they were backstage at "The X Factor" U.S. in Los Angeles on November 15, 2012, when Swift was rehearsing for her guest performance on the show. After that, Swift and Styles were practically inseparable until the first week in January 2013. They had high-profile, jet-set dates in New York City, London, Utah, England, Los Angeles and the British Virgin Islands. (Paparazzi and Twitter photos documented many of these dates.)
People close to the couple began telling the media that Swift and Styles were "in love" and in an exclusive relationship. Swift started to look into buying a home in London, where Styles lives. Sources also told the media that Swift had wanted to be with Styles all along and that Conor Kennedy was just a rebound relationship for her. Some tabloids and bloggers even spread an unbelievable rumor that Haylor was getting married. But the Haylor romance all reportedly ended in the British Virgin Islands, where Swift and Styles reportedly broke up on January 4, 2013, after having a massive argument.
An unnamed source told the Mail Online (the Daily Mail's website): "Yes, I can confirm they have split up. They were on holiday and had an almighty row. They are two young stars at the top of their game so who knows what will happen in the future."
Despite all the kissing and hand-holding that Haylor showed in public, there was always speculation from many people that the Haylor romance was faked for publicity. For starters, many One Direction fans believe that Styles is secretly gay or bisexual. These fans believe that Styles has been romantically involved with his One Direction band mate Louis Tomlinson and BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. Tomlinson, 21, has always denied these rumors and says he's in love with and in a monogamous relationship with University of Manchester student Eleanor Calder, 20, whom he's been dating since late 2011. Grimshaw (who is 28 and openly gay) has not commented on rumors that he and Styles have been lovers.
Grimshaw and Styles were practically inseparable from July to early October 2012: They spent the night at each other's homes and they would sometimes wear each other's clothes, which caused many people to speculate that Styles and Grimshaw were more than just friends. People also wondered why a 28-year-old gay man would be spending so much time with a teenage guy, although most of the people in Styles' social circle are older than he is.
Tomlinson and Grimshaw did not say anything negative to the media about Swift. In December 2012, Tomlinson commented to Us Weekly about Haylor: "I'm glad they're friends."
And, as previously reported, Grimshaw told the Daily Mirror in December 2012: "Harry really likes Taylor, he’s fallen for her in a big way. At first I wasn’t sure if the relationship was a real one but I talk to him a lot and it seems to be that she’s the one – for now, anyway.
"American artists are usually really, really boring and reserved but Taylor is fun. She’s always up for a laugh and is really good company. Harry likes people who make him laugh. I talk to Harry a lot on the phone while he’s away touring and he talks about her a lot. He is very happy with her. I like her a lot too, she came on my show recently and we had a really fun time.”
But plenty of other people (especially most One Direction fans) did not approve of the Haylor relationship. Many of these fans believe that Swift uses famous men for publicity and to write songs about her relationships with them.
Swift has previously dated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (in 2010), actor Taylor Lautner (in 2009), musician John Mayer (in 2009) and singer Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers (in 2008). All of these relationships lasted for just a few months. And just like Styles, Gyllenhaal and Lautner are constantly rumored to be secretly gay.
After Styles broke up with "The Xtra Factor" co-host Caroline Flack in January 2012, he was romantically linked to several women that year, including Ostilly (who was in One Direction's "Gotta Be You" video), model Cara Delevingne, photographer Sarah-Louise Colivet, singer Lily Halpern, singer/actress/former "X Factor" Australia judge Natalie Imbruglia, model/actress Emily Atack and former "Made in Chelsea" co-star Caggie Dunlop. Styles has never publicly confirmed that he has dated these women. Flack is the only woman he has publicly admitted to dating since he became famous. Shortly after he and Flack split up after a four-month fling, Styles said on Twitter that their breakup was "a mutual decision."
Some people are also wondering if the Haylor split is a temporary breakup in what could be an on-again/off-again relationship. Could Haylor be just like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (the teen-idol couple nicknamed "Jelena"), who have broken up and gotten back together multiple times?
However, given Swift's dating history of having relationships that last just a few months, most people predict that she and Styles won't get back together. And even if they do, most people believe that the total duration of the relationship will be less than four months. (Bieber and Gomez's on-again/off-again relationship goes back to 2010.)
After news of the Haylor breakup surfaced, people took to Twitter to voice their opinions, and almost everyone was happy about the breakup. Here's a sample of Twitter comments:
