One Direction's Harry Styles, 18, has reportedly been told by "The X Factor" executive producer Simon Cowell to be friendly to Taylor Swift, 23, because Cowell is concerned that all the negative publicity over Styles and Swift's breakup could hurt One Direction's popularity. An unnamed source told the Daily Mirror in an article published on January 19, 2013: “Simon gave Harry a friendly warning that any animosity between him and Taylor could jeopardize One Direction’s popularity in the U.S."
One Direction is the biggest global act to emerge from "The X Factor," by having No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries. Cowell helped create One Direction in 2010, when he and other "X Factor" decision makers took five contestants who originally auditioned for "The X Factor" U.K. as solo singers and put them in a group called One Direction, which ultimately came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010. Cowell was One Direction's "X Factor" U.K. mentor when he was a judge on the show. He also signed One Direction to Syco Music, the record company co-owned by Cowell and Sony Music.
Swift is a Grammy-winning country singer who has also sold millions around the world. Styles and Swift began publicly dating in mid-November 2012. Their relationship reportedly ended during the first week of January 2013. Swift and Styles have not publicly commented on their relationship. Their representatives aren't commenting either.
There have been conflicting reports over why Swift and Styles (who were nicknamed "Haylor" as a couple) broke up.
The Swift "pal" source told Radar Online: "Taylor is so concerned that the public will think she’s a wh*re because she dates around, that she doesn’t put out. What she doesn’t get is that the guys keep dumping her because she’s being a prude. Harry found Taylor a little sexually uninterested. While it was clear she obviously had a thing for Harry, Taylor didn’t want to put out as often as he would’ve liked. Harry is a young boy, with ladies throwing themselves at him and has had a string of relationships with older women.
“It’s no secret he’s sexually active and is enjoying his fame at the moment. But Taylor just wasn’t up for it as much as he is. They were sexually incompatible. Having a clean and wholesome reputation is super-important to Taylor. She puts herself in these stupid situations but then honestly can’t understand why she’s getting such a shabby reputation.
"Harry wants to go out to fancy bars and clubs and enjoy being young – but Taylor’s more of a homebody and all she would talk about was antiques! It drove him crazy, so he gave her the elbow! Taylor was beyond obsessed with Harry and she was over the moon when he agreed to take their relationship public. But he was over it before it ever really even began.”
An unnamed source told the Daily Mirror: "Harry and Taylor had an incredibly intense relationship, and really did care strongly about one another. Sadly, it fizzled out just as quickly, and came to a head following a series of angry spats on holiday. Harry felt Taylor was nagging him, quizzing him on his intentions with various women and generally having very little faith in him. It all became too much and Harry found her a little too demanding. Taylor probably engineered the split but Harry held all the cards in the relationship.”
Another source told The Sun that Swift screamed at Styles during the argument that ended their relationship: "You’re lucky to even be with me!”
Swift has been getting a lot of public backlash because she has been jumping from one intense relationship to the next that flame out just as quickly as they start, usually after just a few months. She has admitted in interviews that she falls in love hard and fast but she hasn't been able to have a long-term relationship.
And her breakups usually aren't amicable, since she also famously writes songs about the bad breakups she had with her ex-boyfriends, although she refuses to publicly name the exes who inspired her breakup songs. Her other ex-boyfriends include Conor Kennedy (eldest son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.), actor Jake Gyllenhaal, actor Taylor Lautner, musician John Mayer and singer Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers.
After Swift and Styles broke up, people on the Internet began to ridicule Swift and started naming possible song titles that she'll have when she'll inevitably writes songs about Styles. Someone is Swift's camp is perhaps trying to salvage her reputation by claiming to Radar Online that Swift is not interested in having sex with anyone.
But Styles has gotten his share of criticism too. Some of the critics said he was using Swift for publicity since she's a bigger star than he is. And many people have speculated that the Haylor romance was fabricated for publicity because they believe that Styles is secretly gay or bisexual. Swift's ex-boyfriends Gyllenhaal and Lautner have had the same persistent rumors said about them. Although Styles says in interviews that he dates women, he has refused to name anyone he has dated since January 2012.
The people who believe that Styles is secretly gay or bisexual say that he is really having a romance with openly gay Nick Grimshaw, a 28-year-old radio DJ for BBC Radio 1. Styles and Grimshaw are practically inseparable when they are in London together, as they are often seen partying together and spending most of their free time together. The rumors that Grimshaw and Styles are lovers only spread further because paparazzi documented that the two men have spent the night at each other's homes and have worn each other's clothes. Grimshaw has not commented on the rumors that he and Styles are romantically involved.
An unnamed source told the Daily Mirror: “Harry still really likes Taylor but, like anyone who has gone through a break-up, he’s found it difficult to speak to his ex. After flying back to the UK, Harry’s been trying to figure things out and in order to do that he decided to initially avoid her calls.
“They’re two of the world’s biggest music stars, and Simon knew that, although things didn’t work out between them, they were bound to meet at various events and awards ceremonies. Harry spoke to Taylor on the phone while on a trip to Ghana with the One Direction boys this week for Comic Relief.
“Taylor was keen to meet face-to-face and talk things through but Harry felt there was nothing left to be said. Plus the boys’ schedule meant it wouldn’t have been possible as they were due to fly to Japan. Harry told Taylor he didn’t hold grudges and hoped things wouldn’t be awkward when they saw each other.
“Taylor seemed to listen but insisted there were still things they needed to discuss. The air has been cleared between them ... and they’re due to see each other at next month’s Brit Awards, although friends think Taylor may pull out.”
One Direction is nominated for Best British Group and Best Brits Global Success at the 2013 Brit Awards, which takes place on February 20 at the O2 Arena in London. One Direction is also scheduled to perform at the event. Swift is nominated for Best International Female Solo Artist.
