On March 18, 2014, One Direction's Harry Styles and Liam Payne took two female fans as their dates to a Trekstock fundraiser at Soho Sanctum Hotel in London. According to the Daily Mirror, the two fans won the dates as part of a contest to raise money and awareness for the Trekstock charity, which supports young people with cancer.

One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010. Since then, One Direction has become the world's biggest-selling act from "The X Factor," with No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries. One Direction is headlining a world tour of stadiums in 2014.

Cheryl Cole was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. from 2008 to 2010. She was also briefly a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2011 before she was notoriously fired after just a few weeks on the job.

On March 10, 2014, Cole announced that she is going to be a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2014, after years of telling the public that she would never be an "X Factor" judge again. "The X Factor" creator/executive producer Simon Cowell (who said in 2011 that he took "full responsibility" for firing her that year) is the other "X Factor" U.K. judge for 2014 announced so far. The show's other two judges for 2014 will be officially announced by May 2014, but Louis Walsh is widely expected to remain a judge on "The X Factor" U.K., since he has been with the show since its 2004 debut.

Cowell was a judge on "The X Factor U.K. from 2004 to 2010. He left the show's judging panel to become a judge on "The X Factor" U.S., which was on the air from 2011 to 2013. Cowell returned to "The X Factor" U.K. in 2014 when "The X Factor" U.S. was cancelled.

One Direction is signed to Syco Music, the record company co-owned by Cowell and Sony Music. Cowell was One Direction's mentor when he was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K.

On March 18, 2014, Styles and Payne commented to the Daily Mirror about Cole's return to "The X Factor" U.K. and how they think she will work with Cowell this time around:

Payne said: “Yeah, she’s not afraid of him at all, obviously some people are too scared to say what they think around him on the show and she’s, like, ‘No you’ve brought me in to do a job and I’m going to do it.'”

Styles said that Cowell and Cole will be entertaining to watch “because they fight."

As for Cowell's son Eric (who was born on Feb. 14, 2014), Payne commented: "“I hope we get to meet him soon! Oh yeah, when he’s old enough we can have a kickabout with him."
