Harry Reems has died. The male porn star in the 1972 "Deep Throat," the one that made Linda Lovelace a star, passed away at the veterans' hospital in Salt Lake City at the age of 65, reported Fox News on March 21. Reems had a variety of health issues, including pancreatic cancer.
Herbert Streicher, aka Harry Reems, had aspirations to become an actor in non-pornographic films. However, he was "thrown in front of the camera while working on the production crew for 'Deep Throat.'" Harry appeared in many adult films, including the 1973 "The Devil in Miss Jones." In 1976, Reems faced an obscenity conviction for his role in the "Deep Throat" film, but the conviction was overturned. In the '80s, he left the porn industry to sell real estate.
Linda Lovelace, who died from a car accident in 2002 at the age of 53, claimed she was drugged and beaten on the set of "Deep Throat," and she also claimed her husband and manager at the time, Chuck Traynor, was abusive and controlling. Reems admits Traynor was controlling, but he says Lovelace was not physically abused on set. "There's enough people alive who know if she was beat on the set. She was never beat on the set. She was not. That's not true. I was there for the 12 days [of the film's shoot]," said Reems. "I thought she [Linda Lovelace] was sweet and wonderful and quiet. But she was just stuck with the wrong guy. He basically controlled her life."
Allegedly Lovelace and Reems were only paid $1,200 each for appearing in the film, but the film has made more than $600 million.
