In latest “Harry Potter” news, magical author JK Rowling has released a massive statement this week regarding titular protagonist Harry Potter and his relationship with best friend Hermione Granger. While fans of the popular book and movie series about the Boy Who Lived know that Hermione Granger eventually ends up with fellow friend Ronald Weasley, it seems that Rowling has admitted this marriage was a “mistake.” Yahoo News! reveals this Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, that the best-selling author has confirmed that the practical decision would have been to have Harry and Hermione be together at the end of the series, as they would have likely been able to make each other happy.
Hermione Granger is fondly remembered as the only female of the magical trio and a brilliant young witch whose brains and book smarts get both Harry and Ron out of a number of sticky situations in the original books. Played by the talented Emma Watson in the “Harry Potter” movies, this character has long become a fan favorite, and it became evident to both readers and filmgoers that her mutual attraction to Ron slowly budded over time.
In a new interview, however, JK Rowling has made it publicly known that she feels Hermione Granger would have been much better off in the end with primary hero and friend Harry Potter, not red-headed Ron. Rowling even believes that Ron and Hermione together would probably need marriage counseling, sooner than later, had the magical characters existed in real life.
"For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron," Rowling says in an interview with Wonderland magazine, previewed by the Sunday Times and due out this upcoming Friday.
JK Rowling has apologized to “Harry Potter” fans everywhere if this news has upset them, but she feels that followers of both the hit movies and books need to be aware that her distance from the novels since their years-ago release has given her the opportunity to think back clearly and realize that those Harry x Hermione shippers might have been the ones with their wands in the right place.
"I know, I'm sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I'm absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility … Am I breaking people's hearts by saying this? I hope not."
And who was Rowling’s personal interviewer for this special discussion? It was in fact Hermione Granger actress Emma Watson herself, who agreed that in both the books and movies she feels that Rowling is right that Hermione might have gotten along better with Harry in the end, not Ron.
"I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy."
There will always be fans (or shippers) out there for both Harry x Hermione and Ron x Hermione, but such a big reveal (much like when Rowling disclosed that Professor Albus Dumbledore was gay) has already created some major discussion among “Harry Potter” fans. However, quite a few have noted that while the growing romantic relationship between Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley was quite apparent in the books, the movies seemed to certainly hint at times a greater chemistry between the Boy who Lived and the most brilliant witch of her age.
What are your thoughts on this special Harry Potter news announcement? With talks of a new “Harry Potter”-esque movie already in the works (featuring Newt Scamander and taking place decades before the original books), we Potterheads have a lot to look forward to in the future, it seems.
