'Harry Potter' comes to Tenn.: ETSU has a Quidditch team.

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City, Tenn., now has an official Quidditch team, and according to a March 21 article in the Johnson City, they are even hosting a Quidditch Tournament this weekend. The game is based on the Harry Potter series of books, and this mere mortal version of the game is called the “muggle” version.

As if there are not enough college sports teams, ETSU now has an official athletic team that runs down the field with brooms between their legs, pretending to fly while chasing balls that have magical names: a quaffle and two bludgers. This weekend, the ETSU team was scheduled to take on Furman University and Tennessee Tech University. Quidditch tournaments, such as the one this weekend in the Tenn-tucky Conference, are sanctioned by the International Quidditch Association.

Judging by the growing popularity of this book-based sport, Harry Potter fans are an ever-growing, enthusiastic group. However, as with all things Harry Potter, the non-Potter people just really don’t get it. There is one thing for sure. If these people knew how ridiculous an adult looks waddling up a field with a broom between their legs, they would surely reconsider. (Or, maybe not….)

You can view the attached video to find out more about this silly game.
