The Annual Shore AC Polar Bear Races in Asbury Park started in 1964 with Elliott Denman an Olympic Race Walker who at the time was a reporter for the Asbury Park Press. Elliott and several hundred other runners and walkers will be in Asbury Park for the 50th running of the races there on Sunday, December 29, 2013.Elliott will be there for the 50th year in a row.
It is expected that many past participants will take part in the the festivities as will many local dignitaries in addition to Elliot Denman to honor the occasion. Among them will be Harry Nolan who has participated in the event every single year since its inception. Harry has run in the race all 49 years and won the event in 1972, 1973, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1990, and 1996. Last year he finished in 41st place in the storm shortened 5k with a time of 24:06.. Harry will be wearing his distinctive Shore AC shirt for sure.
Sunday, December 29, 5 Mile Run, at 1 p.m. 10 Mile Race Walk and 5 Mile Health Walk at 10 a.m., 50th Annual Asbury Park Polar Bear Races, Asbury Park, N.J.
This year will the races will revert to the traditional 10 mile race walk that will start at 10 a.m. and the 5 mile running event at 1 p.m.
In last year’s 5K coming in first for the men was Andrew Brodeur of Brick, N.J. in a time of 16:47. He was followed by Dwayne Penny Alexis of Brooklyn, N.Y. in 18:15 and then Patrick Sheehan of Mooresville, N.J. in 18:30.
For the women it was Nicole Corre of Red Bank, N.J. in a time of 22:13 followed by Caitlin Dorgan of Red Bank, N.J. in 22:26 and then Dawn Wilcox of Little Silver, N.J. in 22:30.
