IF he *handled* the situation ....? Then why did it blow up in his face?
It wasn't heated because he objected to racism; it grated on people because Harry really hasn't got a clue.
Harry Connick used the *in my country* imperialistic/colonialistic point of view and did the whole we are the centre of the world routine. Total arrogance. He should have had the balls to say *I* find it offensive and an insult.. instead of hiding behind *my countrymen consider it an insult*. Unfortuneately it showed that his personal values were not as high as his value for socially accepted norms.
Let's make it perfectly clear what he communicated: *other people consider it offensive, my countrymen find blackface insulting* and I wouldn't have come on the show if I had known it was going to be on there*...lame. Worst of all, pretentious.
I think Harry handled it pretty well.
He didn't verbally attack anyone. He wasn't disparaging of the tv show, or even the appalling act itself, and he most certainly wasn't in any way disparaging of Australia.
He just said plainly and simply that this would not be acceptable in his country, and he was not lying. And his bearing would indicate that he expected an apology, which he duly receive.
As an Australian, I just hope he isn't put off of my country. I have head him mention that he loves the place, and feels at home here. As for myself, I think you can call me an HCJ fan.
