The effort to create two new national parks in honor of Harriet Tubman got another boost on Thursday, Feb. 9. Legislation to create parks in her honor in both Maryland and New York state was introduced in the Senate.
Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced the Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks Act (S. 247). Legislation to do so has already been introduce in the House (see story linked to below).
Three other senators cosponsored the bill, the other Maryland senator Barbara Mikulski (D) and the two New York senators, Kirsten Gillibrand (D) and Charles Schumer (D).The bill was referred to the Committee on Energy & Natural Resources.

Cardin and other legislators have been trying unsuccessfully to persuade Congress to enact the legislation for five years.
Cardin noted on the Senate floor that he is introducing the bill at the start of Black History Month and that March 13 will be the 100th anniversary of the death of the one-time slave, abolitionist, Union spy and underground railroad leader.
