Harriet Tubman national parks bill introduced in House

Legislation to create two national parks to honor Underground Railroad activist Harriet Tubman was introduced in the House. The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources already approved such legislation, which is now awaiting Senate action.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) and Richard Hanna (R-NY) introduced the companion measure in the House, the Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks Act (H.R. 4007), which was referred to the Committee on Natural Resources. The proposed parks to honor Tubman, a former slave who rescued many others from bondage before the Civil War, would go in their districts. Eight other representatives cosponsored the bill, mostly from Maryland and New York. Supporters include representatives Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and Donna Edwards (D-MD).

The parks would go in Maryland's Eastern Shore and Auburn, NY. Tubman grew up on the Eastern Shore. She later lived in Auburn.
