If you haven’t seen or heard of the Harlem Shake videos then you, obviously, don’t have internet and therefore can’t read this article either. If you have, then you realize the escalating popularity of the latest youtube trend. The videos may seem immaturely funny, however it cost a high school hockey team their chance into the playoffs.
The Nyack Tappan Zee hockey team decided they wanted to join in on the fun and create their own version. If you have not seen their “edition” it starts out like any other Harlem Shake video does. One person begins dancing with a mask on while everyone else in the room acts bored, but when the beat kicks in the entire room goes crazy. The difference is their video seems to take a raunchy leap forward, in fact one of the boys appears naked with only a sock covering his privates.
After the video was upload onto the internet, school administrators forced the team to forfeit their first playoff game, thus ending the season. According to CBS the team and parents were upset over the schools decision. CBS 2 even attempted to get in contact with administrators and the coach but neither have since responded. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. According to Yahoo news, eleven players in D III Susquehanna University football team were kicked off the team after posting their own raunchy Harlem Shake video.
In the end, the Harlem Shake videos are harmless. The idea may be dumb and seem like it came of the mind of a 12 year old, it’s all fun and games. These videos are nothing more then an internet trend that will end and be forgotten, like the “S**t [insert stereotype] Say” videos. There are far worse things in the internet.
