Take an elevation of 5280 feet above sea level. (That is a mile above sea level if you are trying to figure it out). Combine that with the ability to sky above the rim of the basket. Throw in some fantastic basketball handling while sliding across the floor. Add a basketball coach who can throw a challenge flag and have the opposing team perform some outlandish basketball shot. Combine all these into one great mix and you have the makings of a basketball game that is out of this world.
That is exactly what the fans saw Saturday night at the First Bank Center in Broomfield, CO. The world famous Harlem Globetrotters came into town and played their own style of basketball. And with the elevation normally taking its toll on teams, these players sailed high above the rims, slid across the court, did their famous shuffle and did not break a sweat at all.
The Harlem Globetrotters had the entire First Bank Center confused at times of who had the ball. Their expert ball handling and fast drills entertained for four quarters. Of course they got the crowd involved. They did the famous water trick, the switching of the basketball for the opponents free throw, disrupted the players concentration as the other team was trying hard to make this a game. The Harlem Globetrotters even pulled children from the audience and had them shoot a basket, run around with them during the game, and involved children in skits throughout the game. But as was to be expected, the Harlem Globetrotters could not lose. They had the other team stumbling a lot to try to just stay on course and play their game.
TNT who hails from Colorado is the only woman on the team. But don’t let that fool you. TNT can move and shoot just like the men on the team. At times, she is better. TNT moves across the floor and then drops down into a baseball slide and will cover 20 feet while sliding. And yes she is still dribbling the basketball. She can spin the ball on one finger and then transfer it to another person and she will help keep that ball spinning for as long as she wants.
The Harlem Globetrotters main theme is to entertain the crowd, win the game and put smiles on everyone’s faces. They achieved all these and as they left the building, you could see kids attempting to put the ball around their back, dribble between their legs and try to imitate the slam dunks. The Harlem Globetrotters are some of the most respected athletes in the world. They never have a bad thing to say about the opponents, referees, fans or where they play. Something we can all learn from and put respect, athleticism and the love of the game back into the fans hearts.
